Get Ready Before Driving
Adjust the seat.
Put on the seatbelt.
Adjust all mirrors.
Wait for the examiner to turn the engine on.
Once the engine is turned on, wait for the examiner to start driving.
Leaving the Curb
Shift the gear to "DRIVE" position.
Turn the steering wheel to the left as needed.
Turn on left turning signal.
Watch left mirror.
Look at your left blind spot.
If clear, go.
Vehicle Control
When it comes to vehicle control, keep in mind the following aspects:
Acceleration / Braking: You should not apply pressure on the pedals. Press them smooth and wait for the car to react.
Steering control: Always steer hand over hand and keep the control of the steering wheel when turning, straight driving and maneuvering.
Use of gears: Do not forget to shift to the correct gear.
Driving in Traffic
When driving in traffic keep the following aspects in mind:
Keep the right side and proper lane of traffic.
Do not follow too closely.
Do not drive too fast or too slowly (15 to 25 depending on the zone).
Yield who has the right of away.
Keep good judgement in traffic.
Anticipate actions of potential hazards and pedestrians.
When changing lanes, signal, watch mirrors and blind spots.
Turning and Intersections
When approaching to an intersection, make sure you have a good judgement on:
Speed: Start slowing down the vehicle before aheading to the intersection when you are required to stop (on a red light or stop sign). If you are not required to stop, you should not stop.
Turning: Turn right after crossing the cross walk. Make sure you do not make a short or wide turn.
Stopping: If you are required to stop make sure you stop smoothly before the stopping lane. During the road test you will be taken through different types of stop signs and traffic lights. Make sure to stop 1 time on the "STOP ALL WAY" and 2 times on the "STOP".
Observing: Keep observing left, forward and right multiple times before, during and after any turn or intersection.
Signal: You should turn on your turning signal as soon as the examiner ask for the next comand. Once the turning signal is on, watch the mirror and blind spot.
When making a left turn from a two ways street, the driver who is left turning is supposed to wait for the uncoming traffic in the center of the intersection before turning.
Parallel Parking
When parallel parking, make sure to do the following:
Find a Suitable Spot:
Ensure the space is long enough to accommodate your vehicle with some extra room for maneuvering.
Check for any parking restrictions or hazards.
Position Your Vehicle:
Pull up alongside the car in front of the space, aligning your rear bumper with the other car’s rear bumper.
Maintain a safe distance (usually 2-3 feet) between the vehicles.
Signal and Check Surroundings:
Activate your turn signal to indicate your intent.
Check mirrors and blind spots for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, or obstacles.
Begin Reversing:
Slowly reverse in a straight line.
Once the rear of your vehicle is roughly aligned with the rear bumper of the parked car, start turning the steering wheel toward the curb.
Angle the Vehicle:
Continue backing up as your car begins to angle into the space.
Check your mirrors frequently to ensure you’re not too close to the car ahead or behind.
Straighten Out:
When your vehicle is sufficiently angled, turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction to align the car parallel to the curb.
Adjust your position as needed to center your vehicle within the space.
Finalize Position:
Ensure that your vehicle is at a safe distance from the curb (often recommended to be within 12-18 inches, but check local guidelines).
Double-check that you are not obstructing traffic or violating any parking regulations.
Three-Point U-Turn
A three-point U-turn involves moving forward, reversing, and then moving forward again to complete the turn safely.
Prepare for the Maneuver:
Signal your intent to turn.
Check for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and any other hazards.
Ensure that the road conditions allow for a three-point turn.
Point One – Initiate the Turn:
Drive forward to the furthest point possible in your lane.
Begin turning your steering wheel in the direction of the U-turn.
Stop when your vehicle is at or near the edge of the road or in a safe area to reverse.
Point Two – Reverse:
Shift into reverse and check your mirrors and blind spots.
Turn your steering wheel sharply in the opposite direction.
Slowly back up until your vehicle is clear enough to complete the turn, taking care to avoid any obstacles.
Point Three – Complete the Turn:
Shift back into drive.
Turn the steering wheel to realign your vehicle with the new direction of travel.
Proceed forward, ensuring that you complete the turn safely and merge with traffic properly.
Final Check:
Make sure you have fully cleared the intersection or the area where the maneuver was performed.
Cancel your turn signal once the maneuver is complete.
